Q: Unable to access courses on Windows XP with SP2
A: This article applies to users who upgraded their OS with Windows XP with SP2. Symptoms: When you click on "Take Course" in the training plan small window opens on the task bar and gets closed immediately. Even after enabling the pop-ups to open in the browser, the "Play this Course" link will not appear in the course description page. Cause: As you know that last month Microsoft had introduced SP2 for their Windows XP. Due to self imposed access restrictions it has been noticed that LMSs and SkillSoft courses are not working properly on XP machines that have been upgraded to SP2. SkillSoft has communicated this information to us and we have checked and found it to be correct. This problem is encountered by most LMSs worldwide as Microsoft is blocking JavaScript and Applets, which is a key component in eLearning. Work Around: This work around is a temporary solution for Windows XP with SP2.
- Disable the personal Firewall installed along with SP2.
To turn Windows Firewall offYou must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure.Open Windows Firewall, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall On the General tab, click on the following: Off (not recommended). Turning off Windows Firewall might make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from viruses or unknown intruders.
Notes: Windows Firewall is turned on by default for all Internet and network connections. However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators might turn it off.
Windows Firewall is turned on by default, so you cannot use some features of some types of programs, unless the program is listed on the Exceptions tab in Windows Firewall. For example, you might not be able to send photos using an instant messaging program until you add the program to the exceptions list.
- Turn off pop-up blocker
Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer is turned on by default. This will prevent most browser pop-up windows from being displayed while you are online.
If pop-up blocker is not turn off then a message will be displayed stating that "You are currently accessing a course. Please close that to open this course" Turn off the pop-up blocker:
i. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker.
ii. Click Turn off Pop-up Blocker. Pop-up Blocker is on by default. You should need to turn it off.
